Iranians say *"Isfahan nesf-e jahan"* — Isfahan is half the world. Once capital of Safavid Persia, it's Iran's most beautiful city and a must for every itinerary.

## Unmissable sights

- **Naqsh-e Jahan Square (UNESCO):** 160m x 560m, second-largest historic square in the world. Come at 9am and again at sunset.
- **Shah Mosque:** The turquoise dome shifts color through the day. Stand under the dome center and whisper — the echo is magic.
- **Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque:** No minarets, just the most perfect dome in Islamic architecture. Watch the peacock pattern emerge as sun moves.
- **Si-o-se-pol & Khaju bridges:** Join locals singing under Khaju at night, picnic on Si-o-se-pol at sunset.
- **Chehel Sotoun & Hasht Behesht:** Safavid pleasure palaces with frescoes and mirror halls.
- **Jolfa:** Armenian quarter, Vank Cathedral with its stunning fresco mix of Christian and Persian art, plus great cafes.
- **Grand Bazaar & Qeysariyeh:** Miniature painting, khatam, gaz nougat and carpets — haggle kindly.

## Eat in Isfahan

**Beryani** (lamb lung + shoulder, served with sangak bread), **khoresht-e mast** (saffron-yogurt-meat dessert), **gaz** and **poolaki** sweets. Best traditional restaurant: Shahrzad.

Stay 3 full days minimum — Isfahan deserves slow evenings by the Zayandeh River.

## Safavid Isfahan: Why This City Looks Like This

In 1598 Shah Abbas I moved the capital from Qazvin to Isfahan and staged history's largest urban-planning project: a 560m square, a 2km Chahar Bagh boulevard with 4 gardens, 33-arch bridge, and crown mosques — all aligned so the Shah Mosque dome faces Mecca while its portal faces the square. Armenian merchants were resettled to Jolfa (1605) to run silk trade; Georgians and Circassians guarded bridges. The result: half the world in one city — Persians, Armenians, Indians, Chinese, Europeans trading under Qeysariyeh vaults, while Mullasadra philosophized in Madraseh-ye Sadr. Afternoon decline came with Afghan siege (1722) and Qajar neglect, but bazaar and bridges survived. Pahlavi restoration + post-revolution conservation + UNESCO listing (Naqsh-e Jahan 1979, Jameh Mosque 2012) give today's polished but living old town where 2 million Isfahanis still picnic on bridges nightly.

## Three-Day Walking Plan (Save This)

**Day 1 – Square + Bazaar:** 8am Sheikh Lotfollah (peacock ceiling 9–10am), 10am Ali Qapu Palace (6 floors, music room stucco, terrace view over polo matches of old), noon Shah Mosque (whisper under dome, 7-second echo), lunch Shahrzad (beryani + khoresht-e mast). Afternoon Qeysariyeh portal → Grand Bazaar (Qeysariyeh carpet section, Sialk miniature, khatam boxes; haggle 20–30%). Sunset rooftop café (Bahar Narenj) overlooking square. **Day 2 – Bridges + Jolfa:** Morning Chehel Sotoun (20-column palace, 1647 frescoes of battles + European envoys, mirror hall) + Hasht Behesht (8-paradise pavilion, nightingale garden). Lunch Jolfa (Armenian jozghaleh + dolma at Hermes café). Afternoon Vank Cathedral (1648, dome with Creation fresco mixing Persian floral + Christian Last Judgment — cover shoulders, photos allowed no flash) + Jolfa music museum. 6pm Si-o-se-pol sunset picnic (buy sangak, feta, sabzi from bazaar), 8pm Khaju Bridge singing chamber (locals gather under central arch, acoustics amplify — join, don't just film). **Day 3 – North + Artisan:** 8am Jameh Mosque (UNESCO, 1,200 years of Islamic architecture in one building: Buyid dome, Seljuk muqarnas, Ilkhanid mihrab, Safavid tiles — hire official guide $10, worth it). Noon Haruniyeh + Menar Jonban (shaking minarets 11am demo). Afternoon artisan studios: miniature (Master Aghamiri's atelier behind square), qalamkar textile (Qeysariyeh), khatam (Naghsh-e Jahan bazarcheh). Evening Hammam-e Ali Gholi Agha tea house (Safavid bath turned restaurant, live santur Thursdays).

## Food Map: 12 Dishes + Where to Eat Them

Breakfast: halim + sangak at Halim Haj Hassan (Nasr St, 6–9am). **Beryani:** Azam Beryani (2 branches, lunch only, \~$3 — lamb lung + shoulder pounded, served on sangak with torshi). **Khoresht-e mast:** Shahrzad + Shahla restaurants (sweet saffron-yogurt-lamb dessert-meat, eat cold). **Gheimeh + tahchin:** Traditional outlets in Jolfa. **Kebab:** Shandiz Isfahan (Hazar Jarib St, shishlik). **Cafés:** Hermes (Jolfa, best brunch), Kach Café (Chahar Bagh, gallery vibe), Radio Café (Gotar St, board games). **Sweets:** Karkonan gaz (33% pistachio, buy factory shop on Sepah St), Gandi poolaki (saffron-mint candy), Kermani Brothers sazi. **Dizi:** Azam + Dizi Sara. Budget: street falafel $1, restaurant $4–8, high-end $12\. **Tip:** Lunch is main meal (12–2pm); many kitchens close 3–7pm — plan accordingly.

## Stay, Shop, Day Trips

**Sleep:** Budget — Howzak House ($15 dorm, courtyard), Mah Bibi Hostel ($18, female-friendly). Mid — Abbasi Hotel ($90, 300-year-old caravanserai, garden, qanat — book garden wing, splurge one night), Setareh ($40). Traditional — Ghasr-e Monshi ($70, Qajar mansion). **Shop smart:** Carpets (Isfahan Naeen 6la, $500+ — get export permit from seller, required at airport), miniatures (avoid printed fakes — real on camel bone $30+, signed), khatam (inlaid boxes $10–40), qalamkar tablecloths ($15). **Day trips:** Varzaneh Desert (105km, tune-up for Lut — salt lake, pigeon towers, Gavkhouni wetland, half-day $20 taxi), Kashan/Abyaneh en route to Tehran, Chogha Zanbil? No — that's Ahvaz. Isfahan deserves 3 nights minimum; 4 if you love crafts. **Friday:** Square busier, bazaar partly closed morning, bridges liveliest — plan Jameh Mosque + bridges, not shopping.

Practical: Tourist info booth on square (English, maps free). Left luggage at Abbasi. ATMs don't take foreign cards — bring cash. Snapp works great. Toilets: square underground public (2,000 Toman), mosques free. Water drinkable but buy bottled. Summer 38°C — sightsee 8–11am + 5–9pm, siesta midday in café.

## Isfahan After Dark + Shopping Like a Local

Isfahan's real magic starts at 8pm. Join families on Si-o-se-pol with tea flasks and guitars — buy corn and faloodeh from vendors. Khaju Bridge's central chamber hosts impromptu Persian classical singing; the dome amplifies voices for 50 meters. Friday nights draw hundreds. For dinner after 9pm, head to Jolfa's Sang-e Sefid or Kitareh. **Shopping:** Qeysariyeh carpet row — Naeen 6la ($600+), Tabriz Mahi ($400+). Always get shop card + export permit (required at airport for >$500). Miniatures: Master Aghamiri's students sell small bone plaques ($25–60) behind the square — signed, with certificate. Qalamkar: Rezaei workshop prints indigo tablecloths while you watch ($12). Sweets to gift: Karkonan gaz 33% pistachio ($8/box), Gandi poolaki saffron ($3). **Hidden corners:** Bidabad bazaar (coppersmiths hammering), Jarchi Mosque (quiet Seljuk tiles), Bird Garden + Flower Garden (kids), Sofeh Mountain sunrise hike (telecabin $2, city panorama, wild goats). Allow an extra half-day to simply get lost — Isfahan rewards wanderers with caravanserai doors ajar and tea invitations.
