When Tehran shivers at -5°C, Qeshm basks at 22°C. Iran's Gulf islands — Qeshm (largest, UNESCO Geopark), Hormuz (rainbow geology), Hengam (dolphins) — offer Martian valleys, salt caves, mangrove kayaking and Afro-Persian bandari culture found nowhere else in Iran. Go December–February; summer 45°C + humidity is brutal.

## Qeshm Geopark: Stars Valley + Chahkooh + Hara

**Stars Valley (15km west of Qeshm City):** legend says a fallen star carved these pillars and arches; geology says wind + rain on 2-million-year-old marl. Walk the 2km loop at 4–6pm when low sun ignites gold striations; night tours (new moon) add Milky Way. Entry $2, guide $5 recommended (maze-like). **Chahkooh Canyon:** 100m-deep cruciform cleft with ancient rain wells (chah) still used; acoustics amplify whispers — noon light beams best. **Hara Mangroves:** 200 sq km of Avicennia trees submerged at high tide; kayak or lenj boat at sunrise ($8) among herons, spoonbills, sea turtles (nesting May–Aug). **Namakdan Salt Cave:** world's longest salt cave (6.5km mapped) — translucent salt stalactites, salt river; helmet + guide mandatory ($10). **Laft:** windcatcher port village with Tala wells (golden wells, 366-day water system), Portuguese fortress ruins, sunset lenj harbor. **Kharbas Caves + Portuguese Castle (Qeshm City):** half-day fillers; Qeshm City bazaar sells Gulf abaya fabrics, oud, cheap electronics (free zone).

## Hormuz: Eat the Rainbow (Almost)

40-min ferry from Qeshm ($2) or Bandar Abbas ($3). 42 sq km of edible art: **Red Beach (Golshar):** iron-oxide sand bleeds into surf — swim at designated cove (women with manteau per beach rules, privilege ends 5pm). **Rainbow Valley:** 70 mineral hues in one mountainside — yellow sulfur, red hematite, white salt, green copper. Locals cook "Golek" soil into edible red curry (taste small sample, $1). **Salt Goddess + Rainbow Cave:** crystalline tunnels glittering under headlamps ($3 guide). **Portuguese Castle + Nadal Museum:** 1507 fortress + Dr. Nadalian's folk-art complex of driftwood and soil paintings. **Stay:** Majara ecolodge ($30, 70 colorful domes by ZAV architects — Instagram-famous, book 3 weeks ahead winter) or local homestays ($12, henna + cooking with host). **Rent bike** ($5/day) — island is 7×7km, flat. One night minimum, two relaxed.

## Hengam Dolphins + Bandari Nights

From Qeshm's Shib Deraz pier, lenj boats ($6 round trip, 9am–noon best) reach Hengam in 20 min; **Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins** surf bow waves 80% of winter mornings (Dec–Feb calving). Snorkel Silver Beach (turtles, coral — bring own gear, no rentals), shop Telesur oil-doll women for gazelle-dung incense and burqa masks ($5). Lunch: grilled hammour + tamarind sambooseh at beach huts ($4). Back on Qeshm, **Bandari night:** Suza/Dargahan wedding halls host Zar ceremonies (African-healing drums, call-and-response) Thursdays — ask ecolodge to arrange respectful visit (donation $5, no flash). Buy **lenj model boats** ($15, UNESCO heritage craft — Qeshm lenj builders on UNESCO list) and Hormuz soil paintings.

## Logistics: Ferries, Flights, Costs

**Getting there:** fly Tehran–Qeshm 2h ($30, Mahan/Iran Air daily) or Tehran–Bandar Abbas + ferry (cheaper $20 + 1h). Cars ferry from Bandar Abbas Pohl ($10). **Island transport:** Qeshm 130km long — rent car with driver $30/day (hostels arrange) or Snapp intercity; Hormuz walk/bike; Hengam by boat only. **Sleep:** Qeshm — Atman Ecolodge ($20, windcatcher), Irman Hotel ($50); Hormuz — Majara ($30) / homestay $12; Hengam — day trip only (no hotels). **Costs:** mid-range $50/day (ferries $8, tours $15, seafood $6). **When:** Dec–Feb ideal (18–24°C); March still ok; April–November avoid (40°C+humid). **Pack:** reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes (rocky beaches), headlamp (caves), seasickness pills. **Etiquette:** Sunni-majority islands, relaxed but modest swimwear rules; alcohol banned; respect Zar privacy.

## FAQs

**How many days?** 3 (Qeshm 2 + Hormuz 1 + Hengam half-day). **Can I swim?** Yes designated coves; women in manteau/leggings per local norms. **ATM/cash?** Bring cash — island ATMs empty weekends. **Seasick?** Strait chop December — morning ferries calmest. **Qeshm free zone shopping worth it?** Electronics 10% cheaper, but warranty Iran-only.

## Geology Crash Course + Month-by-Month Calendar

Qeshm Geopark (UNESCO Global Geopark since 2006, relisted 2017) exposes 2-million-year record: salt diapirs punching through marl (Namakdan), wind-sculpted yardangs (Stars Valley),/Classic Tethys fossils (dugong ribs in Chahkooh walls). Hormuz salt dome is still rising 1mm/year — the island literally grows. Guides ($10/day, Geopark office Qeshm City) carry fossil charts; ask for crocodile-skull concretions at Tandis Valley. **Calendar:** December — dolphins calve, 20°C, Nowruz-crowd-free, book Majara 3 weeks ahead. January — Sadeh fire visible from Chahkooh rim, flamingos at Hara. February — almond blossom Laft, calmest seas. March — last chance before heat + Nowruz price surge (×2). April–May — turtle nesting Hara (night tours, red lights only), 30°C. June–September — avoid (45°C + sharji humidity, ferries roll). October — first cool front, empty beaches. November — bandari wedding season, Zar ceremonies weekly. **Pack list:** reef-safe sunscreen (coral!), water shoes (Hormuz ironstone cuts), headlamp (salt cave), dry bag (lenj spray), seasickness pills (strait chop), cash in small Toman notes (island change scarce).

## Before You Go: Essentials for Qeshm, Hormuz & Hengam

**Visa:** apply for e-visa 30 days ahead at evisa.mfa.ir (grant notice in 5–10 days), then pay at IKA/Shiraz/Isfahan airport for a 30-day stamp; US/UK/Canada passports require an approved guided tour booked 30–45 days ahead. **Money:** foreign cards do not work — bring crisp euros/dollars, exchange at Ferdowsi Square Tehran or licensed sarrafi, and always confirm Toman vs Rial (1 Toman = 10 Rials). Tourist debit cards (MahCard/DaricPay at IKA) cover shops and Snapp. Budget $25–35/day backpacker, $60–90 mid-range. **SIM + apps:** Irancell tourist SIM at the airport ($5/5GB), install VPN before arrival, and use Snapp/Tapsi for tracked cheap rides instead of street taxis. **Etiquette:** women cover hair/arms/ankles in public, men long trousers in cities; wait for cross-gender handshakes to be offered; never photograph military sites; accept the first tea after one polite refusal (taarof).
