Shiraz is Iran's soul — city of nightingales, roses, poetry and wine (in Hafez's verses, at least). Locals are famously warm and fun-loving.

## Don't miss

- **Nasir al-Mulk (Pink Mosque):** Arrive 7:30-9am in winter when sun streams through stained glass onto Persian carpets. Pure kaleidoscope.
- **Tomb of Hafez:** At sunset, Iranians recite his poems. Ask someone to do a *faal-e Hafez* fortune for you.
- **Saadi Mausoleum & Eram Garden (UNESCO):** Cypress-lined paradise garden with Qajar palace.
- **Vakil Complex:** Bazaar, bathhouse-museum and Karim Khan Citadel — Zand dynasty gem.
- **Shah Cheragh Shrine:** Mirror-mosaic interior that feels like inside a diamond (non-Muslims welcome with guide, modest dress provided).

## Food & day trips

Try **kalam polo, faloodeh shirazi** (rosewater frozen noodles with lime) and **masghati**. Shiraz is base for Persepolis (see our guide), Necropolis, and in May-June, Qashqai nomad migration near Firuzabad.

Stay 3 days: 1 for city, 1 for Persepolis/Pasargadae, 1 to linger with poetry and tea.

## City of Poets: Hafez, Saadi and Why Iranians Cry at Tombs

Shiraz produced Persia's two most beloved poets. **Hafez (1315–1390):** 500 ghazals on wine, love, hypocrisy — Iranians consult his Divan for fortunes (faal): open random page, first verse answers your question. His tomb (1773 pavilion, 1935 garden) hosts nightly gatherings: families picnic, teenagers recite, old men weep. Ritual: toss coin, make wish, open Divan (sold at gate $3). **Saadi (1210–1291):** Gulistan/Bustan moral tales taught from Senegal to Bengal; his "Bani Adam" poem hangs at UN ("Human beings are limbs of one body..."). Tomb is quieter, cypress-lined, with underground fish pond (make wish if coin lands on fish). **How to join:** Go 6–8pm, sit near readers, smile; someone will translate verses and offer tea. Bring Divan with English translation (Nicholson/Clarke) or use Hafez app. Other literary stops: Khwaju Kermani tomb (cliff above Quran Gate, sunset view), Eram's سرو ناز (myrtle garden of poets), Vakil Bath poetry nights Thursdays.

## Pink Mosque Masterclass: Light, Tiles, Timing

Nasir al-Mulk (1876–1888, Qajar) is small but perfect. West iwan's 7-color stained glass (orosi) projects onto winter prayer hall's Persian carpets 7:30–9:30am Oct–Mar (sun angle low). Physics: morning sun through red-yellow-blue glass + dust motes + mirror tiles = moving carpet of color. **Plan:** Arrive 7:30 opening (tickets $5, Iranian card only — guide pays). Enter west shabestan immediately, shoot 20 min before crowds. Settings: no tripod (use pillar, ISO 1600, f/2.8), respect worshippers (Friday busy). After light fades, study tilework: pink roses (Shiraz's flower), European-inspired landscapes (Qajar fashion), Panj Kaseh vaults. Courtyard pool reflects facade — classic shot. Combine with Shah Cheragh across street (free guided tour, chador provided, mirror-mosaic shrine of Ahmad ibn Musa — non-Muslims welcome 8am–8pm except prayer times). **Seasons:** Dec–Feb best light (low sun, long colors till 10am); summer sun too high by 8:30 — arrive 7am. Rainy days no colors — check forecast, have backup Vakil day.

## Shiraz in 3 Days: Gardens, Bazaar, Day Trips

**Day 1 mosques + tombs:** 7:30 Pink Mosque → Shah Cheragh → Vakil Bazaar (carpet/kelim, citron, rosewater) + Vakil Bath museum + Karim Khan Citadel (Zand brick fortress, leaning tower, orange garden). Lunch Sharzeh traditional (kalam polo Shirazi — cabbage-rice with meatballs). 5pm Hafez → Saadi → Quran Gate sunset (Allahu Akbar gorge view). Dinner Haft Khan (7-floor food court, try faloodeh + rest). **Day 2 Persepolis:** see our Persepolis guide (7am–2pm), evening Eram Garden (Qajar palace, 300 roses, سرو 3,000-year cypress) + Jahan Nama garden tea. **Day 3 slow:** Narenjestan Qavam (mirror palace + Zinat al-Molk stained glass, quieter than Pink Mosque afternoon), Afif Abad military museum + garden, Pars Museum (Zand + Achaemenid artifacts). Evening Shapoori house (Qajar mansion café, live tar). **Side trips (4th day):** Qashqai nomads (May–Sep, Firuzabad/Semisrom — book via Shiraz hostels $30 incl. lunch in black tent, sheep milking), Persepolis + Necropolis already, Bishapur/Sarvestan Sassanian (full day), Maharloo Pink Lake (winter flamingos, 30km, sunset salt patterns).

## Shiraz Food + Practical

**Eat:** kalam polo, faloodeh Shirazi (Paludeh Palace behind Arg, $1 with lime + cherry syrup), masghati (rosewater starch with nuts), koofteh sabzi, ashe sabzi (herb soup breakfast). Restaurants: Sharzeh, Haft Khan, Soofi. **Sleep:** Niayesh Boutique ($45, Zand house, pool), Taha Hostel ($12 dorm, tours), Karim Khan Hotel ($30). **Buy:** rosewater (Qamsar, but Shiraz bazaar has), citron jam, Gabbeh rugs (Qashqai, $100+), khatam. **Transport:** Metro 1 line useful (airport–Vakil), Snapp cheap, airport 15 min to center. Shiraz needs 3 nights; 4 with nomads. Spring (Apr–May orange blossom scent citywide) and autumn best; summer 38°C but dry; winter mild 15°C.

## Shiraz Evenings + Orange-Blossom Season

April–May Shiraz smells of bahar naranj (orange blossom) — entire Eram and Jahan Nama districts perfume the air. Municipal distillers sell fresh orange-blossom water ($2/bottle) for sharbat. Evenings: Hafez tomb 7–10pm hosts faloodeh vendors, fortune-tellers with parrots, student guitar circles. Join a Hafez-khani: buy Divan ($3 gate shop), ask neighbor "faal migirid?" — they will gleefully open and interpret. **Qashqai nomads:** May–September Firuzabad pastures (2h drive). Hostel tours ($30) include black-tent lunch (kaleh joosh + fresh yogurt), sheep milking, carpet weaving demo. Buy gabbeh directly ($80–200, half bazaar price). Women nomads ride and herd — photography welcome with ask. **Maharloo Lake:** Winter pink lake with flamingos (Dec–Feb, 30km, sunset best, salt polygons). Combine with Sarvestan Sassanian palace (5th century dome, oldest brick dome in Iran). **Souvenirs:** rosewater Qamsar ($4), citron jam, Qashqai gabbeh, khatam boxes (better prices than Isfahan).

## Shiraz FAQs

**Pink Mosque or Shah Cheragh first?** Pink 7:30am (light), Shah Cheragh 10am (tour) or 8pm (mirrors under lights). **How many days?** 3 (city + Persepolis), 4 with nomads/lake. **Is Shiraz liberal?** Most relaxed dress code in Iran, vibrant café culture — still respect hijab law. **Day trip to Persepolis by bus?** Yes, Karandish terminal, but taxi tour ($25) worth it for Naqsh-e Rostam + Pasargadae.

**Shiraz at a glance for planners:** allow 3 nights (city + Persepolis), 4 with nomads or Maharloo Lake. Spring orange-blossom (April) and autumn (October) are peak; book Niayesh/Taha 2 weeks ahead. Airport to center 20 min by Snapp ($2). Metro line 1 links airport–Vakil. Friday mornings Vakil Bath museum opens 9am, bazaar stalls from 10am. Carry cash: Pink Mosque and most shrines take Iranian cards only — your guide pays, you reimburse. Sunscreen and hat year-round; Shiraz sun is sharp even in March.
