Shiraz: Poets, Gardens and the Pink Mosque
Shiraz is Iran's soul — city of nightingales, roses, poetry and wine (in Hafez's verses, at least). Locals are famously warm and fun-loving.

Don't miss
- Nasir al-Mulk (Pink Mosque): Arrive 7:30-9am in winter when sun streams through stained glass onto Persian carpets. Pure kaleidoscope.
- Tomb of Hafez: At sunset, Iranians recite his poems. Ask someone to do a faal-e Hafez fortune for you.
- Saadi Mausoleum & Eram Garden (UNESCO): Cypress-lined paradise garden with Qajar palace.
- Vakil Complex: Bazaar, bathhouse-museum and Karim Khan Citadel — Zand dynasty gem.
- Shah Cheragh Shrine: Mirror-mosaic interior that feels like inside a diamond (non-Muslims welcome with guide, modest dress provided).
Food & day trips
Try kalam polo, faloodeh shirazi (rosewater frozen noodles with lime) and masghati. Shiraz is base for Persepolis (see our guide), Necropolis, and in May-June, Qashqai nomad migration near Firuzabad.
Stay 3 days: 1 for city, 1 for Persepolis/Pasargadae, 1 to linger with poetry and tea.
City of Poets: Hafez, Saadi and Why Iranians Cry at Tombs
Shiraz produced Persia's two most beloved poets. Hafez (1315–1390): 500 ghazals on wine, love, hypocrisy — Iranians consult his Divan for fortunes (faal): open random page, first verse answers your question. His tomb (1773 pavilion, 1935 garden) hosts nightly gatherings: families picnic, teenagers recite, old men weep. Ritual: toss coin, make wish, open Divan (sold at gate $3). Saadi (1210–1291): Gulistan/Bustan moral tales taught from Senegal to Bengal; his "Bani Adam" poem hangs at UN ("Human beings are limbs of one body..."). Tomb is quieter, cypress-lined, with underground fish pond (make wish if coin lands on fish). How to join: Go 6–8pm, sit near readers, smile; someone will translate verses and offer tea. Bring Divan with English translation (Nicholson/Clarke) or use Hafez app. Other literary stops: Khwaju Kermani tomb (cliff above Quran Gate, sunset view), Eram's سرو ناز (myrtle garden of poets), Vakil Bath poetry nights Thursdays.
Pink Mosque Masterclass: Light, Tiles, Timing
Nasir al-Mulk (1876–1888, Qajar) is small but perfect. West iwan's 7-color stained glass (orosi) projects onto winter prayer hall's Persian carpets 7:30–9:30am Oct–Mar (sun angle low). Physics: morning sun through red-yellow-blue glass + dust motes + mirror tiles = moving carpet of color. Plan: Arrive 7:30 opening (tickets $5, Iranian card only — guide pays). Enter west shabestan immediately, shoot 20 min before crowds. Settings: no tripod (use pillar, ISO 1600, f/2.8), respect worshippers (Friday busy). After light fades, study tilework: pink roses (Shiraz's flower), European-inspired landscapes (Qajar fashion), Panj Kaseh vaults. Courtyard pool reflects facade — classic shot. Combine with Shah Cheragh across street (free guided tour, chador provided, mirror-mosaic shrine of Ahmad ibn Musa — non-Muslims welcome 8am–8pm except prayer times). Seasons: Dec–Feb best light (low sun, long colors till 10am); summer sun too high by 8:30 — arrive 7am. Rainy days no colors — check forecast, have backup Vakil day.
